Social Networking
"Social Networking" is a term used to cover all the ways that people keep in touch with each other, especially on-line.
If you visit a pub regularly, you soon gravitate to people who share common interests. If you join a gym or a choir or a golf club, you are already among people who share the enjoyment and understanding of at least one activity. You soon get into groups with those of a like mind on other things too.
The Internet makes all sorts of activities easier and faster, like finding information or securing the right purchases. In the same way, it offers tools for meeting people with similar views and interests and sharing ideas and opinions with them.
Social Networking on line is about "running up flags and seeing who salutes". When you put information about who you are and what you do and think on Facebook or Beebo or Twitter you hope for a response from people. And you search on those sites for people who are doing and saying what interests you so that you can respond to them. Responses lead to discussions and maybe to on-going associations, be they personal or even in business.
If you went into a pub or a club and said "I want to sell you something," you would expect a pretty bad reaction. Instead you might mention your work and wait for an interested question. Or you might follow the chat carefully, always ready to say "actually, I might be able to help with that need". It is just the same on-line.
